German Wines

German Wine Online!

For many years German wine has been ignored by British consumers, but this seems to be changing and German wines are starting to come back into fashion, especially dry Riesling.

German wines are usually white and come in a variety of styles, from dry through to very sweet; some German fine wine even has great ageing potential. Being a good wine merchant, Heritage has done its best to bring you great quality German wine with excellent value for money.

One of the most underrated German wine regions, Nahe, is where our Riesling Classic by Michael Schäfer comes from. From one of the finest wineries on the Nahe region, this Riesling Classic has a zesty bouquet with honey fruits on the palate.

Kabinett in the German wine classification system is the lowest level of QmP wine, lower in ripeness than Spätlese. These are fully ripened grapes and are usually made in a light style. They may be sweet, dry (trocken) or off-dry (halbtrocken)

The name ‘Kabinett’ comes from the locked cabinets in the cellars of the old states in which the finest wines were kept, as it was originally a term for the finest of German wines. We offer two fantastic fine wine examples of the Riesling Kabinett 2004 - Burg Layer Rothenberg and Bernkasteler Kurfurtslay Kabinett 2002 – QbA.

If you are looking for something with riper fruit which produces rich and sweeter wine, the Spätlese wines are the ones for you. Spätlese means ‘late harvest’ Grapes are picked later than Kabinett wines which helps produce the sweeter wine. Our Estate bottled selection of Michael Schäfer Spältese wines are a must try! Just see our Dorsheimer Pittermännchen Riesling Spätlese 2003 - Estate Bottled and we are sure you will not be disappointed.

If you are familiar with German wines, you will have heard of the QbA. QbA (Qualitâtswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete) means a quality wine from one of 13 designated regions. We host three great examples of these fine wines such as our Liebfraumilch 2008 and Piesporter Michelsberg 2008. Our personal favourite is the Niersteiner Gutes Domtal 2008. Niesteiner is a famous and well known village in the Rheinhessen region. The largest and the best known vineyard is ‘Gutes Domtal’. The harmonious climate, warm summers and mild winters has helped to produce a mild, subtle, light and medium bodied wine that will be enjoyed on any pallet!

The most popular and famous of German Wine is the Eiswein. Eiswein, or ice wine is a type of German dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. This gives Eiswein a refreshing sweetness balanced by a high acidity. As respected wine merchants we have searched hard to offer you two Eiswein wines. Both have now become favourites within our team, especially the Eiswein 1998. Produced with the Pinot blanc grape, this German wine is mouth-wateringly sweet with apricot, peach and mineral flavours.

We understand you may want to try your favourite varietal or style when you buy wine online, but why not try one of our fantastic German wines we have to offer and we guarantee you will not be disappointed.
