Château La Tonnelle 2008/09 - Cru Bourgeois, Haut Medoc, Bordeaux

A combination of old vines; great vineyard location and excellent vintage have produced opulent claret that combines classic claret structure with ripe, complex fruit.

Owned by the Fabre family of Château Lamothe Cissac fame, La Tonnelle vineyards are planted on the hilltops of the Vertheuil village, some 8km west of St-Estèphe. Here, the roots of the vines are able to penetrate deep into the excellent gravily soil and subsoil which gives the tannins and perfumed style that is so typical of the Haut-Médoc wines.

La Tonnelle is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot with the remainder being Petit Verdot from vines that have an average age of 25 years. Once picked, the carefully selected grapes are macerated for 3-4 weeks with double daily pumping over to extract maximum colour and flavour. The wine is then matured in oak casks for 1 year before bottling.
