Valpolicella Classico Superiore ‘Ripasso’ 2008 - Fratelli Farina, Vento, Italy
A striking wine with hints of dried morello cherries, herby fruit and coffee integrated with a distinct hit of spice. Incredibly smooth and complex with soft tannins, this wine has benefited from 18 months of cherry-oak ageing. This further enhances the already richly textured wine with a distinctive bitter black fruit character.
Food match: Great with carpaccio
The origins of this noble and unassuming family lie in the classic Valpolicella region. Remo Farina has been a grower of high quality grapes all his life and he produces and selects only the very best quality grapes, transforming them into wine using the latest technological innovations, yet always with a strict respect for ancient and time tested wine-making procedures, such as ‘Ripasso’.
Ripasso refers to a Veneto tradition of ‘passing back’ the normal wine. This means re-fermenting it on the skins and lees of the Amarone or Recioto wines. This process adds richness and great concentration to the finished wine.

A cold crisp, January day.
A cold crisp, January day. Outside still looks like a winter wonderland. Definitely a day for staying indoors. A great excuse to serve up a winter treat of grilled vension, which was kindly donated to us by the in-laws over Christmas and what better wine to serve. This traditional Italian wine complements the very seasonal dish perfectly. Definitely worth keeping a few bottles in the wine rack.
